Mare su Chiglia

Five years after the production of the first album “Shades”, Maurizio Nizzetto introduce to the audience a new project, “Mare su chiglia, the title-track from one of the 14 tunes.

The composer makes a parallel between the keel of a boat where the sea breaks, sometimes peacefully, bringing happiness and calm, sometimes violently, forcing to struggle and pain so real that there is no option. So that with the typical jazz textures, the listener will face cheerful melodies (“Danza di nuvole”, “Altopiano”, “Con le creature”), characteristic Latin rhythms (“Refluxo” with Portuguese lyrics from Alessia Obino and Beguine), towards a melodic bop (“Getting on the stage” with lyrics from Angela Milanese, “Destini Part 2”), especially ironic and funny in “Saloon”; engaging backbeat rhythms (“Old route”, “Ricordo C. Mingus”) and ballads (“Destini part 1”, “Gocce”) that resemble “Last beach” from the first album. It is worth mentioning “Suonando Filippo”, composed by the pianist Filippo Saccarola who gave it as a friendship present to Nizzetto (who early entitled it “Beautiful, merry, cheerful, alone”).

The artistic project involves Nizzetto not only as composer, but also as expert double bass player. Once again his companions are Paolo Vianello (piano) and Paolo Prizzon (drums and percussions), who gave a priceless contribution in the first album and with whom the author wanted to share new emotions.

The melodies from the Venetian double bass player are interpreted by Angela’s voice, but also from instruments such as flugelhorn (Marco Tamburini), vibraphone (Luigi Vitale), clarinet and soprano sax (Gigi Sella), cello (Alvise Stiffoni) and tenor sax (Alberto Vianello). Moreover “Destini part 1) is played by Luca Pitteri on the piano.

The presence of oboe (Gianfranco Bortolato), of trumpet (Marco Tamburini), of trombone (Mauro Ottolini) and vibraphone (Luigi Vitale), sometimes in solos, makes the arrangements multi-coloured and never repetitive.

During the recording the sound engineers (Andrea Valfré and Marco Lincetto from Magister Recording Area -Treviso) researched meticulously the acoustic features of each instrument and grabbed the sound thanks to specific microphone techniques; Andrea Valfrè’s mixing made the sound detailed and and well-finished.

Marco Lincetto’s mastering refined the work, levelling the tunes and, where necessary, perfecting the balance between the frequencies.

A generous and genuine album, both for the duration (about 72 minutes) and the strong contents. A research of emotional identification from the composer, where the compositions’ genesis is never obliging with the musicians’ technical skills.
