Un’altra Musica

A. Milanese mail“Un’ altra musica” is the first album entirely written and interpreted by Angela Milanese.
The acoustic texture and the Italian lyrics are weaved together with refined melodies, halfway between jazz and songwriting.
“Ali di farfalla” opens the album with a sensual declaration of freedom: “I already know to fly, above the mountains twirl and fall” is the chorus that immediately stands out. “Non è tempo” is a warm ballad that recalls Norah Jones sound, and is centred on sentimental confusion.
The third tune “Io non avrò paura” is dedicated to grandmothers seen as guardian angels, with cheerful memories and details that hide behind the surface irrelevance our most important anchors (“I think of you when I’m cooking potatoes the way you taught me, there’s no art if you don’t add some love”). “Forse il mare” is about an ineffable love, where the harmonica touching solo adds significance to lyrics.
“Se io potessi” is a tender serenade lulled by drums and the darbuka, dedicated to her daughter. The topics are affections and relationships, between mother and daughter, between daughter and father (“Sto cercando te”), thinking over friends, true and not, and the luck of having them (“E’ ricca la mia casa”).
“La tazza gialla”(“The yellow mug”) is the object we absurdly hang on to, during moments of uncertainty or loneliness, though the inner strength emerges from sadness.
An ideal singing lesson is “Voice” in which it is explained the real meaning of singing, beyond the vocal technique: “you’ll sing who you are, every sorrow will speak, every joy will have a new voice”, and the trumpet’s counterpoint is played in the distance.
Some tunes are about artistic and life choices, others are about the effort of being yourself in any situation, both as artists and human beings; and then about the need to tell a different story, a different music, able to speak freely about itself, no matter the genre or the style. This is how “Un’altra musica” buds from the freedom of narrating without hiding behind reassuring artistic, fashionable clichés, that do not actually belong to us.
